Second-Degree Perineal Tear Simulation Model

These are second-degree perineal tear surgical simulation models.
This realistic model allows medical students to practice suturing vaginal tears from childbirth before working with real patients. This was a project that involved client negotiations, manufacturing and development, product testing, as well as pitching a product. This went beyond the scope of illustration and went into the realm of business practices often seen in biomedical communication.

I successfully attained a grant for the creation and production of this project by Augusta University Provost Student Research Program and I presented this model at Augusta University’s Innovate 2025 Pitch Competition and received second place. This event celebrates student and community innovation on campus and provided funding for further manufacturing.

In this video Morgan Lough MD, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Augusta University, is teaching a student the proper techniques for a perineal tear suture.
